L.E.D. stands for Light Emitting Diode. The diode is a tiny electronic device, which emits light when electrons flow
through it. It is a very sophisticated and efficient light emitter compared to an old fashioned incandescent bulb.
The idea for the light bulb is over 100 years old. Thomas Edison invented the concept:
electrical current passing through a thin metal wire inside a glass bulb causes the wire to burn and to give off light. Much of the energy however is wasted in the form of heat, the same heat which eventually
destroys the wire itself, causing the bulb to fail.
Even modern high-performance flashlight bulbs have a typical life span of merely 20-40 hours.
